Summary
An SCR is critical to the success of NSQIP data collection. High-quality data abstraction and ongoing maintenance combines clinical knowledge of health care delivery systems with current quality performance improvement tools and techniques to demonstrate excellence in clinical and surgical outcomes at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital.
The SCR is responsible for abstracting selected surgical cases following the sampling criteria set by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) NSQIP-Peds database. This is accomplished through high-quality clinical screening, data sampling and compilation, documentation, and abstraction of all eligible surgical procedures into the database, as well as data analysis, report generation, and ongoing validation.
This position requires a high-level of clinical judgment, organization, clinical assessment, and self-motivation. The candidate must have experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to organize the data into comprehensive presentations for faculty, staff, hospital committees, and administrative leadership. The SCR will collaborate closely with the Medical Director for Surgical Quality and Safety, Children's Surgery Program Manager, and physician leads for various surgical services. This position reports to the Children's Surgery Program Manager (CSPM).
This is a Hybrid/Remote position with the opportunity to work from home.
Under FLSA, incumbents in this position meet the criteria for exempt status.
What You'll Do
The Pediatric Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) is the primary individual responsible for the abstraction and submission of reliable surgical data through the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project - Pediatric (NSQIP-Ped) database for participation in the Children's Surgery Verification (CSV) Program.
Responsibilities*
- ACS NSQIP Pediatric Data Collection and Analysis Responsibilities - 85%
- Identification of surgical patients for inclusion in the program registry through the strict application of program sampling process
- Collection of data variables throughout the care continuum; according to definitions
- Review of patient medical record to collect clinical data on variables (pre-operative, intraoperative, and up to 30-day post-operative outcomes) for pediatric patients undergoing surgical procedures.
- Validate and submit data through a secure, Web-based system following data acquisition and transmission protocols.
- Meet annual case abstraction requirement through accurate utilization of randomization protocols.
- Obtain necessary information from families and maintain record of accurate postoperative follow-up contact.
- Meet weekly with the Surgeon Champion and CSPM to review postoperative occurrences.
- Accurate and timely entry of data into the database portal
- Conduct/participate in audits conducted by ACS NSQIP to evaluate quality data
- Follow guidelines to ensure appropriate level of review for validation by performing Inter-Rater Reliability (IRR) testing, and participating in IRR review processes.
- Identify areas for improvement and streamlining in the collection process.
- Demonstrate appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the Program (IE: EMR utilization)
- Independently recognize and identify complication triggers/trends in the analysis of the data
- ACS NSQIP Pediatric Champion Responsibilities - 5%
- Demonstrate advanced ability to use performance improvement methods for reviews
- Analytical skills to identify improvement in resource utilization
- Establish effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially the departments whose support is necessary for the success of the program.
- Perform review and analysis of Semi-Annual Review data (SAR)
- Function as educational resource for NSQIP data for both internal and external audiences
- ACS NSQIP Participation - 10%
- Acquire SCR certification within 1 month of hire, and maintain annually.
- Maintain qualifications through standard, annual recertification exam.
- Participates in ACS quarterly call series
- Attend PIPS committee meetings bi-monthly
- Attends ACS conferences as requested
- Participate in additional metrics assigned as required
- Maintain a positive record of professional and courteous interaction with faculty, staff, and peers
- Demonstrate advanced ability to perform statistical analyses and report advanced clinical data in a clear, concise manner to a variety of audiences to support data driven decision making
Required Qualifications*
- Valid Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) licensure required
- BSN required
- Minimum 5-8 years of experience in analyzing and interpreting process and clinical outcomes, database entry, clinical chart review, and/or chart abstraction
- Clinical EMR experience required
- Must attain Pediatric NSQIP certification within one month of hire, pass validation audit at six months of hire, and maintain annual Pediatric NSQIP recertification
- Ability to abstract a high-volume of surgical cases, maintain abstraction schedule and perform data analysis of outcomes to identify trends and/or opportunities for improvement
- Ability to interact with all members of the surgical team and administrative staff in a professional and courteous manner
- Computer and Internet experience required, proficiency in MS Office products is essential (Word and Excel- required; PowerPoint and Access- preferred)
- Ability to create analytic tools for communicating surgical performance
- Ability to speak publicly to all audiences regarding NSQIP related data
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of persons
- Ability to remain motivated and self-directive in meeting deadlines
Desired Qualifications*
- Recent experience (within the past five years) inpatient, clinic, or procedural area (operating room) nursing with pediatric (< 21 years of age) as majority of population served
- Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience preferred
- Basic statistical knowledge preferred
- Previous knowledge and experience with large data set analysis
Background Screening
