Summary

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is looking for admissions interns to serve as the public face of the University to prospective students and parents. Working closely with admissions counselors and the undergraduate admissions team, interns are responsible for: interpreting and communicating admissions policies and procedures to potential students and parents at the middle school and high school level, evaluating applications for admission and providing assistance in the planning and execution of recruitment programs.

Admissions Interns work in a cohort and will have the opportunity to engage in professional development opportunities together to develop professional skills and explore careers available within the field of higher education.

Admissions interns may be considered for placement in either the Ann Arbor or Detroit office locations.  Candidates should express their location preference in their cover letter.

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Enrollment Management (OEM) manages U-M's enrollment function to efficiently optimize student experiences throughout their engagement, from prospect to alumni. The division collaborates with campus partners, faculty, and staff, in support of the university's mission and commitment to academic quality, accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

OEM comprises a dedicated team of more than 200 full-time staff members, and up to 400 additional student and temporary staff and is structured in five operational units - the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of New Student Programs, the Office of the Registrar, and OEM Administration. OEM strives to provide excellence in access and support to diverse and inspiring learners who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

Responsibilities*

50% Application review 

  • Evaluate applications for domestic and international freshmen admission using the University's individualized and comprehensive evaluation process.
  •  Evaluate assigned applications accurately, consistently, and efficiently. Typically, Admissions Interns will review 90-120 applications per week during the application review season (20-30 hours per week).
  • Communicate information related to admissions decisions to students, high school officials, and parents when appropriate.
  • Act as an intermediary on behalf of students, parents, and the public responding to and resolving problems, handling complaints and concerns about educational issues as they relate to admission to the University and students? academic plans.

40% General Office Duties

  • Meet individually with prospective freshman and transfer students and their families who visit the University of Michigan through walk-in advising.
  • Present admission information sessions to large groups (typically between 50-250 people) of prospective undergraduate students and their families.
  • Present to various groups of students from community organizations and middle/high schools to educate them about the value of a college education and prepare them for the college admissions process.
  • Serve as a representative of OUA while answering phone and email inquiries from prospective and/or current students and their families in the office's call center.
  • Provide excellent customer service to visitors to the University of Michigan, as well as prospective and/or current students and their families within the Visitor Center.

10% Program assistance

  • Assist in the planning, preparation, execution, and evaluation of many recruitment programs and special projects.
  • Represent the University of Michigan at college fairs, career fairs, high school visits, receptions, and other public service programs and events.
  • At any given time, admissions interns may be assigned varying degrees of responsibility or have full responsibility for a segment of the following:
    • Coordinating and supervising Special Group Visits.
    • Assisting with the hiring, training, and scheduling of Tour Guides.
    • Coordinating with faculty to secure speakers, lecture times, and exchange ideas used to plan programs, as well as bringing together representatives from offices such as New Student Programs, Financial Aid, Housing and our various academic units.
    • Coordinate, train, schedule, advertise, and deliver a student volunteer call-out event.
    •  Prepare and maintain appropriate periodic and special program reports and surveys that have significant impact on recruitment strategies, policies, and planning.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree is required.

Applicants must possess excellent communication and presentation skills, data analysis and interpretation abilities, a strong work ethic, a high level of professionalism, ability to manage multiple tasks and be familiar with basic computer software applications.

Day and/or evening travel might be required at times throughout the year; overnight travel is not required for the Admissions Intern. Some weekend work is required.

Desired Qualifications*

Experience working with students and colleagues from diverse ethnic backgrounds is desirable.

Experience or knowledge in admissions work, recruitment principles and student support services is desirable.

Knowledge of the nature, aims, and organizational workings of a college or university is desirable.
