Responsibilities*
Fundamental responsibilities
- Fulfills duties assigned by 12E MPLAN leadership.
- Participate in regularly scheduled (2-3/week) touch base with unit leadership partner to identify and solve problems. Frequency to be determined by 12E MPLAN partners.
- Responsible for day-to-day safety, quality, operations, and finance of patient care unit (PCU).
- Conduct purposeful rounds with unit partners to achieve unit goals.
- Ensures day-to-day operations are consistent with institutional and departmental employee codes of conduct, employee recognition and employee engagement.
- Collaborate with unit MPLAN partner to create and support an environment where cutting-edge, innovative, and appropriate care is provided to a continually growing number of patients.
- Share PCU activities, best practices, and improvements across enterprise at MPLAN meetings.
- Represent the PCU on health system committees as requested by the CW associate triad.
Program and Clinical Management
- Develop and implement unit goals and objectives which include the establishment of standards of practice in patient care consistent with national professional and regulatory guidelines.
- Ensure the PCU achieves performance goals set jointly with the CW associate triad, and MPLAN unit partner(s).
- Participate in ongoing and annual review of safety, quality, operations, and finance for PCU in collaboration with MPLAN partner and other PCU leadership as defined in unit-based operating system that is aligned with hospital operating system.
- Monitor safety, quality, operations, and financial outcomes as aligned with institutional priorities.
- Resolves clinical, operational, and interdisciplinary problems on unit jointly with unit partner and other unit leadership.
Financial Management (area of growth and training)
- Coordinate with unit partners and other disciplines to plan, evaluate, and manage budget of patient care unit.
- Participates in planning teams to determine and implement unit improvements.
Performance Improvement
- Lead performance improvement (PI) activities on PCU in collaboration with unit partner and other unit leadership.
- Facilitate and support service excellence, patient satisfaction, continuity and coordination of care, and quality improvement initiatives, including:
- Data analysis and regular review to assure compliance with health system operational principles
- Implementation of clinical guidelines and standards of care
- Foster development of team-based care which supports collaboration across all services and coordination of care on the unit.
Leadership Development and Training
- Participate in MPLAN leadership development and training program.
- Promote the academic and clinical missions by ensuring that infrastructure is in place to support and communicate education and training initiatives for all providers and unit staff.
Required Qualifications*
- Degree: A Doctor of Medicine/Osteopathy/Dentistry (DMD or DDS) is required.
- License: Possession of a current license to practice medicine or dentistry in the State of Michigan is necessary.
- Membership: Current, active Member in good standing of the Medical Staff.
- Faculty: Active appointment as a full-time Member of the Medical School Faculty.
- Experience & Education: Appropriate clinical experience and education and Board Certification (or equivalency) is required.
- Service Activity: Current, active clinical role on the unit is required.
- Quality: Active interest in impacting unit quality
Desired Qualifications*
Leadership Experience: Administrative leadership experience is desirable.
Additional Information
- 20% effort - 12E Medical Director's full appointment is protected for MPLAN responsibilities.
- Anticipated length of service is 3 years.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
