The Research Analysis and Data Integration Office (RADIO) invites applications to the academic/administrative position of Associate Director. This position is a 25%, term-limited appointment. Applications are due by 5pm, April 19. 2024.
About RADIO
RADIO, launched in 2021 and based in the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), analyzes and integrates many types of data to serve, support and strengthen the University of Michigan's research, scholarly and creative enterprise. RADIO aims to provide knowledge to inform research leader decision-making and to serve and strengthen University of Michigan research, creativity and scholarship, and their benefits for the world through rigorous, responsible data science. Associate Director Role and Responsibilities
This position reports to Dr. Jason Owen-Smith, Associate Vice President for Research - Institutional Capabilities and Research Intelligence. The Associate Director will work closely with Dr. Owen-Smith, RADIO staff, OVPR leadership and a variety of stakeholders including research leaders from around campus to expand and use research-informed analytic capabilities to strengthen U-M's research, scholarly and creative practice enterprise. This position offers a rare opportunity to apply faculty expertise in data science, network science, science of science, science and innovation policy, science and technology studies, sociology and economics of science, innovation and technology strategy and management and similar fields to inform strategic decision-making at U-M.
Responsibilities will include:
Play a leadership role in the design, development, testing, and expansion of the RADIO data analytics infrastructure.
Lead/make significant substantive and methodological contributions to the design, implementation, and write-up of longer term special project analyses.
Take primary responsibility for discrete sets of RADIO deliverables (e.g. specific projects associated with particular groups or areas of focus).
Represent the Associate Vice President for Research - Institutional Capabilities and Research Intelligence in meetings with stakeholders and, where necessary, OVPR leadership.
Make presentations of RADIO findings to stakeholder groups on campus.
Consult with OVPR, Executive Office and Unit teams as well as large grant PIs on metrics, measurement, and evaluation issues.
Aid in development and implementation of appropriate organizational and business process integration to align RADIO with other OVPR initiatives and coordinate with OVPR staff in similar roles.
Aid in project and program management work and provide a second expert point of contact for RADIO analysts to streamline evaluation of new data implementations and address technical questions.
Other tasks identified as the role develops.
Required Qualifications
Interested candidates must be a University of Michigan faculty member with an appointment at the associate or full professor level or equivalent, with a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant discipline.
Previous research or academic leadership and/or administrative experience
Demonstrated expertise in the collection, cleaning, integration and use of data from multiple sources to examine and report on the dynamics, characteristics and outcomes of research and creative practice work
Demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary research collaboration and familiarity with the structure and character of faculty work in multiple parts of The University of Michigan
Experience developing and managing partnerships with internal and external collaborators and stakeholders
Ability to clearly and effectively communicate complex ideas and findings to both technical and general audiences in both speaking and writing
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and familiarity with equitable data system principles and practices
Term of Appointment
This is a 25% appointment with a three-year term limit. Once a final selection is made the effective date of the appointment will be determined based upon mutual agreement between the selected candidate and OVPR.
