Course Description

Course name:  INTLRGN 501: MIRS Research Design Seminar

Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) for INTLRGN 501: MIRS Research Design Seminar INTLRGN 501 is an introductory seminar over the Fall term, designed to help Masters in Regional and International Studies (MIRS) students acquire the tools necessary to develop a research project that will ultimately result in a Master?s Thesis or completion of a practicum by the end of the second year. It is mandatory for first-year MIRS M.A. students and optional for other II M.A. students. It is co-taught by faculty members in the humanities and social sciences. Course content will be taught in fall and will culminate in students? completion of a final proposal at the end of the second semester. The course involves class discussions, student presentations, guest visits from faculty across a range of disciplines and area foci, and hands-on learning at UM libraries. 

Appointment period:  Fall Term, 2024

Responsibilities*

This is a 50% GSI position. The anticipated workload is 20 hours per week. The GSI will work closely with the instructors on all facets of the course in order to help meet student needs. Duties include but are not limited to the following: facilitate weekly class meetings, collaborate with instructors to support the creation of course materials, prepare and deliver some lessons, hold weekly office hours, assist with grading of homework and projects, communicate with instructors regularly, administrative tasks (management of Canvas site, copying, etc.)

Required Qualifications*

- Graduate student in good standing in the University

- Previous experience as a GSI, with favorable student evaluations

- Graduate level coursework in area studies

Desired Qualifications*

PhD student in the humanities or social sciences

GSI experience in a writing-intensive course, such as ULWR courses

- Extent of prior instructional experience

- Relevance of course to the GSI?s graduate training
