The Residential College Arts and Ideas in the Humanities major program, https://lsa.umich.edu/rc/current-students/curriculum/arts-and-ideas-in-the-humanities.html, is seeking to hire a Lecturer I who would start Fall 2024 and teach courses on African, Asian, and/or Middle Eastern art. We expect this person to have a Ph.D. in art history or related discipline. This will be an up to 100% position for teaching up to three courses in the fall semester and up to three courses in the winter semester.
The primary focus for this position is to teach in the Residential College Arts and Ideas in the Humanities Program. The candidate will provide instruction for classes of approximately fourteen undergraduates in an interdisciplinary liberal arts program. We expect the candidate to have a deep understanding of art forms in historical and cultural context and to be willing to conduct conversations on struggle, misunderstanding, and imbalances of power. The courses envisioned should encompass a complex and varied field. The candidate should be prepared to integrate at least two art forms (e.g. film and painting) in at least one course. Additional duties include participation in college- and program-wide activities, including attending student exhibits and program meetings. The instructor will provide written evaluations for Residential College students enrolled in the course.
Teaching in the First Year Writing Seminar program is also highly desired. The primary purpose of the FYWS is to prepare students for expository writing at the college level. A further aim of the FYWS is to introduce students to the intellectual life of the university through small class size and emphasis on discussion.
The successful candidate will find a vibrant scholarly community within the university. The RC, in seeking to broaden its curricular offerings, remains committed to active participation in that campus community.
