Summary

The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning seek a temporary Woodshop Technician to provide technical support, maintenance, and organization of assigned studio and instructional environments. Your responsibilities will be in the Woodshop. You will report to the Lead Woodshop Coordinator with functional supervision from the Woodshop Technician. You'll work on-site, at the Art & Architecture Building in Ann Arbor, MI.

Note: This position will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and employment is expected to begin in mid-April and conclude in July of 2024.

Responsibilities*

  • Help coordinate the daily operation of assigned studio and instructional environments, including preparing studios for use by faculty and students; help perform classroom demonstrations as requested; and provide support to studio users to ensure the appropriate application of technical processes and safety.
  • Collaborate with the Lead Woodshop Coordinator to provide a productive and cooperative work environment for students and faculty and to troubleshoot and find workable solutions for space, equipment, and technical needs that arise.
  • Manage and train student workers who serve as studio assistants.
  • Maintain the physical facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Implement and enforce a preventative maintenance program for all studio equipment; maintain an inventory of supplies and related materials; collaborate with Lead Woodshop Coordinator on the development of procedures; and help develop the facilities and services through researching new technologies, equipment, processes, and materials.
  • Ensure a safe and secure studio environment, including: following EHS procedures to maintain safe studio practices; Implement studio use policies; Oversee chemical and solvent supplies to ensure safe storage, usage, and disposal;
  • Assist the Lead Woodshop Coordinator in maintaining reports on those qualified to use the Studio (students, faculty, visiting artists).
  • Assist the Lead Woodshop Coordinator with managing expenses and reconciling monthly statements.
     

Required Qualifications*

  • Undergraduate degree in art & design, architecture, or a related field, or commensurate professional experience.
  • 1+ years of professional experience using machines and tools associated with wood fabrication.
  • Experience with CAD and vector software such as Adobe Illustrator or Rhino 3D.
  • Basic computer experience (spreadsheet, word processing, basic digital image editing and printing).
