Summary

Receive and prepare patients for dental treatment. Prepare work surfaces and materials for use by the dentist. Assist a dentist at chair-side in the treatment of patients. Assist with oral examinations and charting under the supervision of the dentist. Perform dental radiography work. Keep records of appointments, examinations, treatments and supplies.

Responsibilities*

  • Assist in a wide variety of chair-side procedures using the principles of four-handed dentistry. 
  • Specializing in the treatment of medically and/or mentally compromised patients while working with dental students, residents, and faculty.  
  • Perform general assisting duties that include processing contaminated/sterile instruments, set-up/tear-down Operating Room & treatment rooms, seat patients and prepare for treatment, assist with preliminary health and physicals prior to treatment, take vitals, obtain consents.  
  • Coordinate and maintain the inventory, ordering and distribution of dental supplies, instruments and equipment. 
  • Expose and develop radiographs according to standard procedures or specific instructions. 
  • Clean, disinfect, and arrange work surfaces, storage cabinets, sinks and dispensing areas. 
  •  Coordinate the proper maintenance and set-up of dental equipment and operations.  
  • Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain area.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • BLS certification & a certificate in Radiography.  
  • Reasonable knowledge of dental clinic practices and procedures.
  • CDA and/or RDA certification.
  • This classification requires Primary Source Verification

Desired Qualifications*

  • Associate degree in Dental Assisting.
  • Some knowledge of University of Michigan policies, practices, and regulations.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
